Please tell us about yourself. Hi everyone, I’m Joselyn Tan from Singapore. I’m 47 years old and have been happily married for 27 years with 3 lovely sons. I am the co-founder of a public relations & social media agency. Joining this pageant is my way of sharing my journey and raising awareness for mental health.

I have been diagnosed with severe depression for the past 7 years of my life but when you take one look at me you couldn’t possibly have guessed that – because that is just how common depression could be.

Despite being diagnosed with severe depression, my mission is to empower women globally, shed light on mental health, and create a safe space for others to share their struggles, just like me.

I believe every voice deserves to be heard, and every story deserves to be shared. Together, let’s foster a culture of empathy and support for mental well-being.

Interesting fact about me: My friends like to refer me as the PR Queen for my success in getting CEOs, businesses, and brands to be featured in magazines, radio interviews, and newspapers. But, not many are aware that I am also a certified beauty therapist, massage therapist, aromatherapist, beauty, and makeup trainer.

What does women empowerment mean to you? For me, women’s empowerment means standing up for yourself, learning to say no, embracing empowering thoughts, choosing to be a warrior, taking care of yourself, and giving back to society.

I identify five key qualities for inspirational women: purpose, belief, empathy, encouragement, and thinking big (daring to dream big).

What inspired you to your first pageant? My journey into pageantry began with Mrs Singapore World 2022, where I was crowned Mrs Inspirational, setting the stage for my mission to break the stigma around mental health.

When encouraged to participate in Mrs Asia Pacific 2023, I saw it as an opportunity to share my journey and reach out to other women facing similar struggles. My mission in this pageant is to use this platform to raise awareness for mental health and create a safe space for others, just like me.

I know I will be immensely proud of my journey to becoming a better individual and achieving milestones I never thought possible seven years ago.

Why did you choose to compete for your current title? Joining Mrs Asia Pacific 2023 is a personal decision rooted in a seven-year battle with Clinical Depression. Despite the dark moments, this chapter symbolizes resilience and hope. Through this platform, I aim to break the silence around mental health struggles and share my story to inspire others. Depression and mental health challenges should not be stigmatized; seeking therapy is an encouraged step toward healing.

A recent, challenging episode highlighted the importance of mental health discussions. An attempt to overdose led to an 11-day hospital stay, sparking deep introspection and a renewed purpose to openly address mental well-being struggles.

This is more than just a personal story; it’s a testament to resilience, compassion, and the unwavering belief that even in the darkest moments, hope can shine through.

Tell us about your experience during the competition.

One week before Mrs Asia Pacific 2023, I fell terribly ill with a severe cough. I was still deciding whether to proceed with this pageantry as we were required to travel to Malaysia, specifically Pulai Springs Resort.

Then, I reflected on my WHY – why did I want to join Mrs Asia Pacific 2023? When encouraged to participate in this pageant, I saw it as an opportunity to share my journey and reach out to other women facing similar struggles. My mission in this pageant is to use this platform to raise awareness for mental health and create a safe space for others, just like me.

I know I will be immensely proud of my journey to becoming a better individual and achieving milestones I never thought possible seven years ago.

Since day 1, I found myself immersed in an unwavering battle against severe sickness that persisted throughout the entire duration of the pageantry trip. The relentless schedule, encompassing packed days of travel, various activities, and photo shoots, gradually took its toll on my health.

As the Grand Finals approached, my struggle intensified, grappling not only with a persistent high fever and a painful sore throat but also enduring moments of complete blackout, with episodes of fainting leaving me in a precarious state. Despite these daunting physical challenges, what astonishes me most is the depth of my own endurance and unwavering perseverance. Against all odds, I summoned the inner strength to navigate through the obstacles, participating wholeheartedly in the opening dance adorned in the national costume, shouldering the weight of the heavy flag with pride, and seamlessly transitioning to grace the evening gown and catwalk segments.

Looking back, it becomes clear that every challenge was worth its weight in gold. Beyond the glittering surface of the pageantry, it was the sisterhood and friendships we fostered that stood out, creating an unbreakable bond. The invaluable experiences gained from this journey, coupled with the enduring connections formed, make each trial truly meaningful.

This transformative experience, marked by resilience, camaraderie, and personal triumph, will forever be etched in the tapestry of my life as a powerful testament to the strength discovered within oneself when faced with adversity. It’s not just a memory; it’s a testament to the indomitable spirit that prevails, turning challenges into stepping stones toward personal growth and unwavering determination.

Special thanks to all the sisters and Queens who willingly shared their experiences. Deep in my heart, thanks to our organizer and founder, L’umiére International, Justina Quek, and the committee team for creating this opportunity for all of us. Lastly, gratitude to all the sponsors.

Advocacy
My decision to join Mrs Asia Pacific 2023 is deeply personal, rooted in a seven-year battle with Clinical Depression. Despite the dark moments, this chapter symbolizes resilience and hope. Through this platform, I strive to break the silence around mental health struggles, sharing my story to inspire others.

As a staunch advocate for mental health awareness, my journey through pageantry has redefined my purpose – to raise awareness and eliminate stigma. I emphasize the need for a safe space to discuss mental health openly.

My aim is to empower women globally, raise awareness of mental health, and provide a safe haven for those, like me, to share their struggles. Leveraging my position, I vocalize the message that it’s okay not to be okay and continue sharing my journey to influence and empower others. Every voice and story deserves recognition, fostering a culture of empathy and support for mental well-being on a global scale. Together, we strive to break the stigma surrounding mental health in a world where every story matters.

Volunteer

Dedicated to contributing to the local community, I also actively volunteer at Punggol 21 CC Women’s Executive Committee. Through this role, I engage with community initiatives, fostering connections, and making a positive impact.

What are some of your achievements?

My proudest achievement is my family. I got married at 21 and gave birth to my eldest son at 22, the second son at 24, and the youngest son at 28. I started my entrepreneurship in my 20s, co-founded a boutique spa at the age of 29, and now co-founded a Public Relations and Social Media Marketing agency.

I was honored as a finalist for “PR Champion of the Year (Agency) 2023”. éclat PR Media’s journey, from inception to recognition at Marketing Interactive PR Awards 2023, mirrors growth and collective achievements.

Recently, I fulfilled my dream by performing piano in front of more than 200 guests. I played my favorite pieces: Für Elise, River Flows In You, and Kiss the Rain.

I was also invited for an interview and the publication of my biography by a prestigious British Publishing House. This opportunity is part of their 6th edition encyclopedia, a compilation of success stories and biographies from diverse personalities across Malaysia and Singapore.

Currently, in the collection phase, the encyclopedia aims to showcase these stories in a hardcopy format, accessible in national libraries and online. This initiative serves as a form of recognition and legacy, inspiring younger generations to find motivation and guidance in the narratives of accomplished individuals.

What does it mean to you to be a Beauty Queen?

Beauty Queen – is more than just crowns and titles. They’re a way for women to lift each other up, be real role models, and where my mental health isn’t a flaw but a strength.

Beauty queen often being labelled or stereotyped as someone who’s glamorous, attractive, or slim and tall. What a true beauty queen means to me, is definitely how you carry and portray yourself, how you go through the rough to help others, how your inner beauty shines over your outer beauty, and lastly beauty that comes with intelligence. A true beauty queen doesn’t always live a glamorous, perfect life.

My mission is to inspire and motivate others to step into the spotlight, especially in women’s and mental health communities. Break the stigma, and create a space where everyone feels safe.

How did pageant help your self-esteem and body image?

You know, I’ve had my fair share of struggles with societal pressure and comments about my physical appearance, especially regarding my weight gain due to medication. It’s tough, especially when relatives bombard you with unnecessary comments during Chinese New Year. I used to be petite, slim, and weighed only 48kg, so dealing with these changes has been quite challenging.

Approaching the Mrs Asia Pacific 2023 swimwear photoshoot, I found myself grappling with self-consciousness, feeling like the heaviest among all. Gaining more than 18kg due to antidepressant medication didn’t make it any easier. But, I’ve learned to take a more light-hearted perspective, reducing self-criticism and understanding the importance of not comparing myself to others. It’s become a journey of self-love and self-care, where I’m putting in the effort to become a healthier and slimmer version of myself.

With the Mrs Singapore Asia Pacific 2023 platform, I’m on a mission to spread love and encouraging words. I want to promote openness about mental well-being and health, normalizing the idea of talking about struggles without having to be over them yet. As someone going through depression, I know it’s not easy to share that you’re currently struggling. However, talking about it can help shift your mindset and allow personal growth. It’s not just about me; it’s about letting others know that it’s okay to talk about their challenges, too.

You are an inspiration to all the girls out there. How does it feel?

As I immerse myself in the beauty pageant platform – L’umiére International, my commitment to normalizing discussions around mental health takes center stage. I recognize the power these platforms wield, and I am determined to leverage them to break the stigma associated with mental health and inspire others.

I feel that this is an important role to inspire other women and younger women. My own personal 4Es are empathy, empowering, encouraging, and educating.

What are your plans during your reining as a Queen?

Now adorned with the titles of Mrs Asia Pacific Empowerment Beauty 2023/2024 & Mrs Singapore Asia Pacific Cosmopolitan 2023 in Mrs Asia Pacific 2023, I carry the torch of empowerment, mental health awareness, and the courage to shatter the silence surrounding our struggles. Let’s unite to weave a cultural tapestry marked by empathy, understanding, and unwavering support. In this space, every voice resonates, and every story deserves to be heard.

As we navigate a world where every story holds significance, let’s join hands to dismantle the stigma shrouding mental health. The best attitude is gratitude, and in every moment, there’s always something to be thankful for. Together, let’s foster a collective commitment to breaking the chains of silence and building a world where mental health is embraced without judgment.

I’m all about being vocal on mental well-being. Let’s make it normal to talk about our struggles, even if we’re still working through them. I get it – when you’re in the thick of depression, the last thing you want to do is tell the world you’re struggling. But trust me, sharing your story not only helps you shift your mindset, but it also lets others know it’s okay to open up. And that, my friend, can make a world of difference.

Utilizing diverse channels such as women’s communities, associations, media, podcasts, and public speaking, I aim to empower women globally. My goal is to raise awareness of mental health and create a safe space for individuals, like myself, to come forward and share their struggles. I firmly believe that every voice deserves to be heard, and every story deserves to be shared. Together, let’s cultivate a culture of empathy and support for mental well-being.

My goal for 2024 & 2025 is to volunteer abroad for women’s empowerment and girls’ education. Despite making up 50% of the world’s population, millions of women and girls around the world continue to be marginalized and regulated to an inferior standing in their communities, depriving them the ability to reach their full potential and maximize their contributions to society.

The challenge is to change centuries of oppression, one mind at a time. It starts when you acknowledge that we all need to work towards women’s empowerment and girls’ education, not just in our own communities, but on a global level. Gender inequality is an insidious problem, and it affects more than just women; it impacts their families, from one generation to the next.

Working with international volunteers and organizations to provide opportunities for teaching English, computer literacy, and other skills to help women and girls build better futures for themselves, and earn an income to support their family, to overcome poverty and discrimination.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind? I would want to be remembered for raising awareness for mental health and my humanitarian efforts, much like Angelina Jolie and Oprah Winfrey.
